Appended with the more conventional tracks ("Fat Old Sun", "Summer `68"), it has the edge on Oldfield for accessibility, but the sprawling, side-filling title instrumental remains as equally ambitious.if a bit flawed (particularly the very-early-70's vocal freak out bit). There was a brief albeit misguided point in my life where I truly believed that Pink Floyd were incapable of making a bad album, resulting in my furious championing of the bovine-adorned opus that is Atom Heart Mother. Obviously, Oldfield's is the more celebrated of these particular two (most folks might sooner pit Bells against, say, Dark Side or Wish You Were Here), but I find these albums technically the most simillar, so take yer pick. It’s another decent early Floyd record, overshadowed by their better records later on.Battle of the wanky prog instrumentals. Atom Heart Mother is disjointed but quite pleasant, consisting of mostly songs that wouldn’t ever make a “greatest hits” compilation but are far from throw away material. However, the final third of the song is actually quite good, which disappoints me heavily that it’s just thrown in at the end.
Folky instrumentations are interspersed by Alan, eating breakfast. Lastly, Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast is… a little ridiculous. The next track, If, is forgettable, but both Summer ‘68 and Fat Old Sun are quite well constructed and charming, with solid vocals, nice arrangements, and reasonable runtimes. Unfortunately after a strong start it does drag in the second half. The guitar sounds great with the brass section accompaniments, and the choral elements are quite lovely as well. Opening up with the gargantuan, 22 minute runtime on the title track, the first five minutes are immediately much better than anything on Ummagumma. One of the few early Floyd albums I’d heard before, it’s somewhat intimidating to go into a five track album with a runtime of 52 minutes.
